2025 started with the zest and energy of the Annual Sports and the Cultural Program of Dakshini Prayash “Satat Ullas 2025”, celebrated on 11 and 12 January where children all children participated in sports with great enthusiasm along with ex-students and parents and teachers also having one event for themselves. In the cultural event the children showcased drills and dance performance.
The Girls Cricket team from Dakshini Prayash, who was the runner’s up team last year in a Girl’s Cricket league organized for seven underprivileged schools supported by Calcutta South Round Table and Calcutta South Ladies Circle, worked hard and practiced daily after school with the in house coach and became the winning team in the cricket league in 2025.
63% of students scored above 60% in their final exams in 2024. This marks a slight improvement from 61% in 2023. Among these high achievers 40% are boys and 60% are girls. This upward trend reflects the collective efforts of our students, teachers, and families. The greater performance by girls is especially encouraging.
To enrich the celebration of Holi, Zomato Feed India provided a 5x5 feet canvas and art supplies, encouraging students to express their creativity. Younger children joyfully created hand paintings, while older students made individual drawings reflecting the festival's theme. Some contributed to the large canvas, working together on a collaborative artwork. This fun, meaningful activity fostered creativity and connection, made possible by Zomato Feed India’s generous support.
To empower and equip our children with the necessary skills and competencies to navigate today's complex information ecosystem, Dakshini Prayash partnered with AltEd-, with an objective to foster informed citizenship amongst children aged 12 to 18. They organized a 15 days’ workshop on media and information literacy for students in classes 8 and 9. This workshop enabled our students with tools to make informed decisions and develop a responsible approach as they consume and share information across various ecosystems by enhancing their media literacy and critical thinking abilities.
In a heart-warming initiative, five elderly members of our community received the gift of clear vision through cataract surgeries supported by Rotary Mahanagar Netralaya. These life-changing procedures have not only restored their eyesight but also renewed their independence and confidence. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Rotary team for their compassionate support and commitment to community health.
An Awareness camps was organized on Cervical cancer in December 2024, where the parents of the children were informed about the disease and why it is important to get vaccinated against this deadly disease. Following that 57 children in the age group of 9 to 14 years came for the 1st Dose of the Cervical Cancer on 28 January 2025. Out of these 57 children 11(19%) are from the community.
Dakshini Prayash’s Self-Reliance Unit is currently benefiting 35 women, helping them move toward economic independence. Among them, 9 women have shown consistent dedication and, since January 2025, have been provided a monthly stipend under a retainership model to support their continued participation.
To expand income opportunities and promote product diversity, the women are now receiving new skill training in candle making and embroidery. These efforts aim to strengthen their abilities, boost confidence, and open doors to sustainable livelihoods.
